General Descriptive Text:
'Following the removal of a damaged plaster ceiling at a house in Belmont Place, Robin Hood's Bay, two timbers, one
bearing the name "ELIZABETH JAN..." and the other "IPSWICH" were found acting as joists. In 2005, following a
visit to Ipswich, Suffolk, the ELIZABETH JANE was found to have been a sailing vessel that was lost in an unknown
way "off the coast of Yorkshire".' (1)
The ELIZABETH JANE was recorded as a brig, in registration documents from Ipswich, from 1830 onwards. In the
final registration document dated 1846, her name is cancelled, and the document is endorsed "Lost 9th July 1854 off
the Coast of Yorkshire". (1)
References: Suffolk Records Office IG 2/2/2, IG 2/2/3 and IG 2/2/4.
NB: The endorsement of various masters throughout her history at Newcastle, and latterly, Blyth, may suggest that the
vessel was employed in the coal trade; the position of loss between her home port of Ipswich and Newcastle may lend
some credence to this supposition. Additionally, the vessel type and tonnage of the ELIZABETH JANE is typical of
contemporary colliers; in the absence of any further information at present, this cannot be confirmed. (2)
Built: 1817 (1)
Where Built: Guysborough, Nova Scotia (1)
Previous Registry: 1827, Stockton-on-Tees (1)
Construction: square-rigged; standing bowsprit; square stern; no galleries; no figurehead (originally a female bust) (1)
Master: George Archer, endorsed master at Blyth, May 17, 1854 (1)
Owner: William Read of Ipswich, 64/64ths (1)
